Surge Protectors and Power Sources

Power strips and surge protectors ( or surge suppressors) are two different products. Usually, a power strip is an inexpensive, multiple outlet extension cord. Power strips typically include a circuit breaker; however, they do not provide any substantial "protection" from electrical concerns.

Surge Protectors

Surge protectors are an inexpensive way to protect your gear against random power spike damage. They're not all the same. Here's some tips before you start shopping.

Whether you need additional outlets or an added layer of protection for your devices from unforeseen events, you will ultimately need to purchase a surge protector.

Power Source

Power strips are necessary for any workstation, home entertainment system or kitchen appliance due to their need more sockets to power each device in any given situation.  Power strips only use one standard outlet and provide several additional sockets for extension cords and devices.

Even though they don't offer the most protection, a portable power strip is ideal for those who have lots of devices to charge and make traveling a breeze seeing as most hotels don't offer many accessible outlets, yet we all have multiple devices that require charging. Most portable power strips add two to three additional outlets, plus a lot of them offer direct USB charging.

There are a number of products on the market that claim to "condition" the power from the wall, promising improved performance in your gear. Here's the dirty little secret: your gear already does this. All electronics have a power supply that takes the incoming wall current (110v in the US), filters it for noise, and converts it into whatever the device needs. Almost nothing actually runs on 110 volts (or alternating current, for that matter), so unless you've got some really wacky (or cheap) gear, and live in an area with bizarrely inadequate power, a power conditioner isn't something you need.
