Install Project

Project is a stand-alone application for Windows. It is available as a subscription or non subscription. The steps below will guide you on how to install Project for each. 


Tip: Before you begin, check to make sure your device meets the minimum requirements. 


System Requirements

Computer and processor1.6 gigahertz (GHz) or faster, 2-core

Memory4 GB RAM; 2 GB RAM (32-bit)

Hard disk4.0 GB of available disk space

Display1280 x 768 screen resolution

GraphicsGraphics hardware acceleration requires DirectX 9 or later, with WDDM 2.0 or higher for Windows 10 (or WDDM 1.3 or higher for Windows 10 Fall Creators Update).

Operating systemWindows 10, Windows Server 2019

BrowserThe current version of Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox. Get more details.

.NET versionSome features may require .NET 3.5 or 4.6 and higher to also be installed.

OtherInternet functionality requires an internet connection. Fees may apply.

A touch-enabled device is required to use any multitouch functionality, but all features and functions are always available by using a keyboard, mouse, or other standard- or accessible-input device. Note that touch features are optimized for use with Windows 10. 

Product functionality and graphics may vary based on your system configuration. Some features may require additional or advanced hardware or server connectivity. 

Cloud file management features require OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint.

Microsoft account or organizational account required for license assignment.



Project Online Professional or Project Online Premium: 

If you have a subscription to Project Online Professional or Project Online Premium, you won't see the option to install unless you have an assigned license.


Project Online Essentials:

No desktop version available, so no installation is required. 


Project Standard or Project Professional:

If you have a non-subscription version of Project Standard or Project Professional you should have received a product key with your purchase.



Step 1: Sign in and download

  1. Go to www.office.com and if you're not already signed in, select Sign in.
  2. Sign in with the account you associated with this version of Project. This account can be a Microsoft account (used with non-subscription versions), or work or school account (used with subscription versions).
  3. After signing in, follow the steps below for your subscription or non-subscription version of Project.

Project Online (Professional or Premium)

  1. From the Office home page select Install Office apps > Other install options.
  2. Under Software, select Project. Choose the language and the bit version you want, then select Install.

Note: If Project is not listed under the Software navigation heading, it probably means you don't have a license. Check if you have a license, and if you don't, contact your admin and ask to have one assigned to you.


Project (Standard or Professional)

  1. From the Office home page select Install Office.
  2. If you have multiple Office products you may have to scroll through the list of your owned products, or if you have an Office 365 subscription, in the header, select Services and subscriptions which lists all the Microsoft products you own.

Locate the version of Project you want to install and select Install.

Project should now begin downloading. Follow the prompts in Step 2 to complete the installation.



Step 2: Install

  1. Depending on your browser, select Run (in Edge or Internet Explorer), Setup (in Chrome), or Save File (in Firefox). If you see the User Account Control prompt that says, Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device? select Yes.
  2. Install should begin
  3. Your install is finished when you see the phrase, "You're all set! Project is installed now" and an animation plays to show you where to find the Project app on your computer.

Follow the instructions in the window to find Project, for example depending on your version of Windows, select Start and then scroll to find Project from your list of apps.
