I am hardly a "spring chicken," having started working on PCs in DOS, graduating to very small menus, continuing to Office 2003 (which I really liked and thought could not be improved upon), and only purchased Office 2007 Home and student because it was important to me to stay compatible with the office in which I work. I am "beating a dead horse" here - but so far as I'm concerned, Office 2007 has taken me back to Sq. 1 -- having to relearn all that I had mastered these past years. With that said, the ribbon is here and we just have to deal with it.
I updated from MS Office Home & Student 2003 to 2007. As with most that use this program, the Home and Student is sufficient for everyday use and the newer format is easy to use. Personally, I always like the disc versions of software rather that the download versions, even if it may cost a little more. Since I transitioned from XP to Windows 7, I felt it was time to dump the aging 2003 version and I'm glad I did. I read reviews about the newer versions, and most said it was not worth getting the newer versions over 2007 as there were few changes, so I purchased 2007.
Any serious student must have Microsoft Word. I will admit that for someone new to the program, it has a fairly steep learning curve, but with a good book (or friend) to guide you, you will grow to love this program. Of course I appreciate the spell checker, however, what I find invaluable is that it will point out problems such as run-on sentences, passive sentences, dangling participles, and other easily overlooked problems with grammar. And for those of us who are addicted to making spreadsheets, let's not forget Microsoft Excel! Get Microsoft Office 2007 Home & Student, it has it all and it's perfect for students, as it says on the tin.
