Remote Desktop Services accelerates and extends desktop and application deployments to any device, improving remote worker efficiency, while helping to keep critical intellectual property secure and simplify regulatory compliance. Remote Desktop Services enables virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), session-based desktops, and applications, allowing users to work anywhere.

Role description

The Remote Desktop Services role provides technologies that enable users to connect to virtual desktops, RemoteApp programs, and session-based desktops. With Remote Desktop Services, users can access remote connections from within a corporate network or from the Internet.

Practical applications

Remote Desktop Services allows workers to work anywhere. Some of the key benefits of Remote Desktop Services include:

  • Unified administration experience Administer your session and virtual desktop collections, configure your RemoteApp programs, manage your virtual desktops, and add servers to the deployment from one centralized console.

  • User personalization User profile disks allow you to preserve user personalization settings across session collections and pooled virtual desktop collections.

  • Less expensive storage Pooled virtual desktops can use local storage live migration between host computers. Personal virtual desktops can use storage located on network shares.

  • Automated pooled virtual desktop management Deploy and manage pooled virtual desktops centrally by using a virtual desktop template. Any changes, such as application installation or security updates, are installed on the virtual desktop template, and the pooled virtual desktops are then recreated from the virtual desktop template.
New and changed functionality for Windows Server 2012 R2

In Windows Server 2012 R2, Remote Desktop Services includes enhancements in the following areas:

  • RemoteApp programs perform more like locally-based applications

  • Improved reconnection performance for remote clients

Complicated Stuff

Installed Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services - PC - 1 Device CAL on Dell PowerEdge T320 with PERC controller volumes. The Dell System Builder OS Pre-Install disc did not have an option for 2012, but luckily, I was able to upgrade 2008R2 to 2012 even though Microsoft claims there's no direct upgrade path. The 2008R2 installation was basic with no roles or added features and was not activated. The reason for the upgrade was because they could not locate their original media and the server had a 2010 COA.

Enjoying it!

This is simply a license but not to be confused by old oem editions, from now on this is how microsoft sell their software and are constantly leaning away from selling cd's. Take the new exchange for example.. there is no cd option at all, not even to 1k plus organisations. There are now only 2 editions.. standard and datacenter.. hyper-v (clustering) capabilitys are included in both unlike in 2008 where you would require enterprise edition in some circumstances. I have always preferred the idea of adding licenses to an account, it makes for easier access and means no individual can physically take your license from your premises. Still enjoying Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services - PC - 1 Device CAL i got from my choice software

Can be daunting, but power always is

Whilst losing the start menu may be daunting for some, those in the IT world are often much more open to new technologies and change than others. I myself was sceptical when first shown this in Windows 8, but after getting used to the operating system, I now find that I no longer need the start menu. Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Remote Desktop Services - PC - 1 Device CAL has made me make much more use of the amazing task bar, which has actually made work much quicker because things open in a single click rather than two (I used to pin things to the start menu, now I pin them to the task bar). Pressing the windows key and just being able to search immediately is also really simple for keyboard users. I can thoroughly recommend this new OS, the new features are also nice. Live migration is incredible, it feels much faster than 2008 R2 as well.
