Windows Server 2016 licensing model
This product is a license for a Microsoft Windows Server 2016 Remote Desktop User CAL for Microsoft Windows Server 2016 (sold separately) that allows a device to connect to your server remotely.
Each user and device accessing a licensed Windows Server Standard, Datacenter or Multipoint edition require a Windows Server CAL, or a Windows Server and a RDS CAL.
The Windows Server 2016 licensing model includes both Cores + Client Access Licenses (CALs).
Access to server
A Windows Server CAL allows access to any edition of Windows Server of the same or earlier version.
Access to multiple licenses
Each Window Server CAL provides access to multiple licenses of Windows Server.
After the General Availability of Windows Server 2016, the business model for Standard and Datacenter editions will transition from processor-based to corebased licensing.
|Editions||Licensing model||CAL requirements*|
|Windows Server 2016 Datacenter||Core-based||Windows Server CAL|
|Windows Server 2016 Standard||Core-based||Windows Server CAL|
|Windows Server 2016 Essentials||Processor-based||No CAL required|
|Windows Server 2016 MultiPoint Premium Server||Processor-based||Windows Server CAL+ Remote Desktop Services CAL|
|Windows Storage Server 2016||Processor-based||No CAL required|
|Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2016||NA||NA|
* Some additional or advanced functionality such as Remote Desktop Services or Active Directory Rights Management Services will continue to require the purchase of an additive CAL.
Azure Hybrid Use Benefit
Rather than paying the full price for a new Windows Server virtual machine, you will pay only the base to compute rate.

Love this server OS. The option of a "Core" installation is nothing new, but keeping this as an option gives admins the choice of the smaller footprint or the GUI interface. I thought server 2012 was a disaster. Server 2008 R2 was about as good as it could get. Well, Microsoft Windows Server 2016 Remote Desktop Device CAL - Open Academic is (in my opinion) just as good, if nmot better than server 2008 R2, but we are getting back on track. very impressed with Microsoft Windows server 2016. a lot of nice features and major updates to Hyper-v and DFS make updating to this version a must.
after migration from 2008 R2 to Microsoft Windows Server 2016 Remote Desktop Device CAL - Open Academic, a huge difference, excellent powershell, better defender protection and frequently update signature, improved search option, After fighting with server 2012 for a few years its so much better to have an OS that works like its suppose too. A fantastic OS. I had been using 2008 r2 and then added in a 2012 r2. Finally got my hands on the 2016 and I have been loving it. It is the simplistic version of 2012 r2 GUI wise which I prefer significantly.
As a majority Windows shop, Microsoft Windows Server 2016 Essentials - Open Government was a welcome update from 2012. Other admins that rely more on GUI were lost in 2012 while 2016 is close enough to Windows 10 to not have a large learning curve. All I can say with this OS is Powershell, Powershell, Powershell! If you don't know it you should brush up on it bcause it's super usefull with this OS! I have this installed on one server, and I can't wait to upgrade the other ones. Fast, works well, and not to mention the GUI is aesthetically pleasing and easy to maneuver.
