Windows Upgrade Recovery Using DISM

April 18, 2024

Gregory Shane

If you've recently upgraded your computer from Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10 and are experiencing unexpected functionality issues, don't worry – you're not alone. It's common for older systems to encounter compatibility hiccups during the upgrade process. Fortunately, there's a simple solution to get your system back on track.

Understanding the Issue

When transitioning from older versions of Windows to Windows 10, various system components may not seamlessly integrate, leading to functionality disruptions. However, Windows provides built-in tools that can effectively address these issues.

Solution:

1. Right click the start menu (Window Icon) and select "Command Prompt (Admin)"

  • NOTE: If you are able to use the search function inside the start menu (Windows Icon), you can also search CMD. Right click the option for Command  Prompt, and select Run it as an Administrator:

2. Enter the Following Command:

  • DISM /Online / Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

3. Press Enter to start the scan. Once completed it will display results

4. Enter the next command:

  • SFC /scannow

5. Press Enter to start this scan. Once completed it will display results and may prompt to restart the computer if any corrupted files were found. Restart the computer to allow it to apply fixes and changes.

  • Note: There are three response to the SFC Scan:
  •
  • 1. "Windows Resoucre Protection could not perform the requested operation."
  • This means the SFC scan couldn't be performed properly. In this case you might need to run the san while the computer is in Safe Mode.
  •
  • 2. "Windows Resource Protection found corrupted files and successfully repaired them."
  • This means the SFC scan found and fixed and found issues.
  •
  • 3. "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."
  • In this case, you might need to repair the system manually. If this is the case, please contact My Choice Software support fo the next steps by emailing Support@MyChoiceSoftware.com or calling 1-800-318-1439.
